Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore

Spello (PG)

It is the main church of the splendid Umbrian city. Of particular value is the intervention on the friezes of the cornice and on the ancient Latin inscription placed in honor of the Virgin, and on the ciborium.

The intervention was characterized by the structural consolidation of the bell tower with perforations, the renovation of the roof of the art gallery adjacent to the frame of the large central window and the travertine crowning cornice dating back to the sixteenth century, which had widespread cracks mainly in the bearing structures, and loss of parts of chromium.

The restoration was carried out by removing lime scale, and other surface deposits by using very low-pressure washing and subsequent application of ammonium carbonate poultices, reinforcement of the disjointed parts, restoration of cracks and hairline cracks with suitable resins and mortars, restoration of all the chromatic glazing, with final protective treatment. The facade surfaces were cleaned using the “Abilis Torbo” low pressure system, which allowed each individual element to be dosed by means of dispensing valves that perfectly calibrate aggregates, water and air. The lime was made of finely washed and dried quartz sand without any dust residue, and each micro granule was coated with a specially desalinated and demineralized water film, which in the impact phase with the support created a sort of “shock absorber”, thus avoiding aggressive action on the surface.
